Gehry

Over the last two years, when time would allow, I have focused my energy on a personal project that explores the amazing work of internationally renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry. During my month away I got the chance to add another 2 buildings to my growing collection of images.

The First is the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Since I started this project, it was one building that I could not wait to shoot. I love all the metal buildings, however the Guggenheim has some of the craziest lines and angles of all of Gehry’s buildings. I got extremely lucky the light cooperated on the day I went to shoot it, and I think I got a fantastic result. So good in fact, that I present 2 images today, because I simply can’t pick.

The second building was the Dancing House in Prague. This is by far the most difficult building I have shot to date. The mix of concrete and glass presented a whole host of challenges, but after wandering back and forth around the building for almost an hour, I feel that I came away with something that I am happy with.

A Month Away

I was lucky enough to spend most of the month of December, and the first part of January traveling around Spain and France. Today is just a short post written through the fog of jet lag of some of my favorite shots from the trip.

I was especially lucky to visit the Guggenheim in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry, with whom I am more than a little obsessed (more on that in the coming days)

Last week I was given the opportunity to go down to New York for a couple days for work, it was pretty busy, but on the last day I got a chance to go out and wander around for a couple hours with my camera.

Besides the obligatory shot of the Brooklyn Bridge the afternoon gave me a chance to continue my obsession with the buildings of Frank Gehry. These two shots are of the IAC building, it is a pretty incredible structure, and is meant to give the feeling of a sail boat.

Drumheller

I took a trip out to Alberta’s badlands with my good friend Ryan HK, He was looking for a couple shots of his new motorcycle and I was looking to try out my new D800.

I am really impressed with this camera, but I won’t bore you with all the specs, it has been talked about by people a lot smarter than me everywhere else on the internet. All I can say is that I love the files and I can’t wait to shoot more with it.

Flashfact.org

Recently I shot the fine folks over at Flashfact.org a blogging and podcast community. It was a great experience for me, working in a tight space and shooting 10 different subjects in a couple hours, and playing with a new camera system. Despite a ton of technical hiccups caused by software and an unfamiliar camera, I am pretty happy with the results.

Recently my Gehry series was selected by Applied Arts Magazine as part of the Young Bloods section of the Annual Photography & Illustration awards, Those of you who follow the blog are probably already familiar with the shots above, but I thought it was a good opportunity for some shameless self promotion.

I’m really happy with how this photo turned out, I set out to make something that felt more bright and airy than most of my work, but that still had a similar style, I think I was successful.

Big thanks to Laura and Robin for assisting me on this shoot, it makes my life so much easier to have an extra set of hands around.

Cocktails: Neat.

This project is way outside what I normally shoot, I decided I wanted to try my hand a photos that were less about the lighting and the action and more focused on the design and small details. I had an awesome time shooting the project and I already have 8 more cocktails in mind.

I would love to know what you all think, especially since this series is way outside my comfort zone
